Who is it for?
Individuals who as part of their role will be required to use a microscope to count asbestos fibres in air samples.

Aims:
To ensure that individuals can describe the approved methods for correctly setting-up of air sampling equipment and for fibre counting and have an understanding of their limitations and the requirements for quality control.

Course Content:
This 'P' module provides theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of fibre counting of asbestos air samples using phase contrast microscopy (PCM). The module is at a proficiency level which aims to provide the candidate with the practical knowledge and skills to be able to carry out the stated work elements include:
  • Setting Up Microscope
  • Filter Preparation and Fibre Counting
  • Calculation of Results and Quality Control
  • Practical Work
  • Microscope set up for:-
  • - Slide preparation
  • - Fibre counting for a range of fibre densities and types
  • - Set up of air sampling equipment
Assessment:
Individuals will undertake a practical assessment carried out by an independent assessor. As part of this, candidates must demonstrate their ability to mount filters, prepare slides, set up microscopes, count slides and make calculations.

Examination A 30 question multi-choice exam paper (45mins) will be undertaken on the final day of the course. This exam will be independently invigilated by BOHS and is subject to a separate BOHS exam fee.

If candidates have no experience in fibre counting or bulk sample identification then it is advised that they should initially take the course, gain some practical experience in the respective work and then take the examination/assessment at a later date.

Additional Information:
Prior to training candidates should be familiar with 'Asbestos: The analysts' guide for sampling, analysis and clearance procedures (HSG 248)'. Individuals will normally need to have some practical experience with Phase Contrast Microscopy in order to pass the practical assessment. Due to demand on this course candidates will need to bring their own Phase Contrast Microscope. To comply with the requirements for the '4-stage clearance procedure', this module must be studied in conjunction with BOHS P404 - Air Sampling and Clearance Testing for Asbestos.
